WEGO Health?s Health Activists Offer Resources, Expertise on May Health Awareness Campaigns

Boston, MA (PRWEB) April 29, 2011

During the month of May, the online health community will focus efforts on increasing public awareness for a variety of health conditions and issues, among them Lupus Awareness Month, Mental Health Month and Celiac Awareness Month. Leading online health community WEGO Health is comprised of a unique group of patient experts, called ?Health Activists,? whose leadership in and vast influence on the online health communities makes them ideal resources to speak to these specific causes and conditions.

Health Activists are social media organizers, leaders, and contributors who each reach an average online audience of more than 15,000 users every month. This month, WEGO Health is offering a collection of resources, discussions and inspiration to recognize Health Activists within Lupus, Mental Health and Celiac Disease communities. By signing up through WEGO Health?s May Awareness Portal, visitors will be able to receive access to exclusive awareness resources, including a list of Health Activists to follow online, ways to connect with others, tips on how to support the awareness efforts of others and conversation-starters for health communities.

Below are the Health Activists featured on WEGO Health in support of health awareness campaigns featured during the month of May.

Representing Lupus Awareness Month, Amanda Green, Lupus Health Activist and blogger at LA Lupus Lady:

“I feel that the FDA approval of the first new drug (Benlysta) for Lupus in over 50 years is a huge turning point for the Lupus community. While one FDA approval is not a cure, it is a step forward. I hope that the innovative research taking place all over the world will bring new discoveries for the treatment and more FDA approvals for Lupus drugs.”

Representing Mental Health Awareness Month, Cindy Nelson, Mental Health Activist with NAMI Mass:

?Mental Health Month is a great chance for us to bring together advocates, volunteers, people living with mental illness, caregivers, etc. all for one great reason. The NAMI walks give everyone a way to get involved and really help us raise awareness for something that affects a lot of people.?

Representing Celiac Disease Awareness Month, Wendy Rose, Celiac Disease Health Activist and blogger at Candy Hearts:

“I’ve noticed more companies starting to offer gluten-free food choices but at the same time, the FDA still has not finalized standards for U.S. gluten free labeling laws. This leads to concerns regarding hidden gluten and risk of contamination. The 1 in 133 campaign was launched in response to the FDA’s inactivity regarding this manner.”
